Dumfries & Galloway Leisure
Dumfries and Galloway Council asked CN Research to carry out a survey with non-users of the council’s sports facilities.  A random sample of residents from Upper Nithsdale, Nithsdale, Stewartry and Wigtownshire was contacted to take part in the survey.  The survey addressed issues such as; knowledge of existing sports provision, reasons for preferring council or private sports facilities, reasons for non-use of council sports provision, and factors which may encourage non-users to use council sports facilities. Telephone numbers of residents were selected at random from Upper Nithsdale, Nithsdale, Stewartry and Wigtownshire.  Residents that had used council sports facilities in the last 12 months were excluded.  In all, 1005 telephone interviews were achieved with non-users of council sports facilities. 

South Lakeland Leisure
South Lakeland Leisure asked CN Research to undertake a research project with 500 infrequent users of the Kendal Leisure Centre.  A telephone survey was carried out with a sample of respondents living within an approximate 30 minute radius of the Kendal Leisure Centre and questions were asked on publicity of the centre, satisfaction with visits made to the Centre, reasons for not using the Centre regularly, events or activities that would attract usage of the Centre, alternative preferred sport and leisure venues, image of the Kendal Leisure Centre, knowledge of current events, facilities and discounts.  Criteria for interview selection were someone that had never used the Kendal Leisure Centre, or had used it infrequently.  Regular users of the Centre were excluded from taking part in the survey.  CN Research carried out a telephone survey with 500 people that had never, or infrequently, used the Kendal Leisure Centre.  Respondents lived within approximately 30 minutes drive time of the Centre, including surrounding areas such as: Ambleside; Sedbergh;, Cark and Flookborough.  

Carlisle Leisure Facilities – non users
Carlisle Leisure asked CN Research to undertake a number of surveys with non users of a number of their different facilities including; The Sands Centre (Leisure Centre) two golf facilities and two separate Pool facilities in the area. The research was undertaken by telephone. 500 respondents for the Sands Centre, 500 respondents for the Pool facilities and 500 respondents for the golf facilities. The research informed Carlisle Leisure of the publicity running on the facilities, the reasons for not using the facilities, what private facilities were used, any transport issues as well as the current discount card scheme.

Allerdale Leisure Facilities – Users
Carlisle Leisure Ltd asked CN Research to carry out a series of research projects relating to various facilities within their current portfolio of operations.  Carlisle Leisure recently won the contract to run the leisure facilities in Allerdale which include; Workington Leisure Centre, Keswick Leisure Pool and Cockermouth Leisure Centre. As part of the business plan to improve these facilities Carlisle Leisure needed to know what the local people who use the facilities think about them. These research reports from the users of these facilities acted as an initial benchmark for Carlisle to measure their improvement over the coming years.
CN Research were asked to carry out 300 face to face interviews at Keswick Leisure Centre 300 face to face surveys at Cockermouth Leisure Centre and 300 face to face interviews at Workington Leisure Centre to obtain the views of the users of the facilities. A user was strictly defined as a person who was using either of the two facilities within the last 12 months. The face to face interviews took place over the period of two weeks and all interviews were undertaken during the day in order to maximise response rates.
