About Catherine Nixon

Background & Experience

I am a PhD-qualified researcher with around two decades of experience across academic and applied research in health, education, psychology and sociology.

My research career has included qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method research, working across different stages of the research process from study design and data collection through to analysis, interpretation and reporting. I have particular experience in qualitative interviewing and analysis, survey research, quantitative analysis, evidence synthesis and research exploring people’s experiences.

I hold a PhD in Education, an MSc in Social Research Methods and a first-class degree in Psychology & Counselling. This combination has given me a strong grounding in research methodology alongside many years of practical experience conducting and contributing to multidisciplinary research.

A particular strength of my work is analysis and interpretation: taking complex qualitative or quantitative material, identifying what matters within it, and developing clear and meaningful findings. I am equally comfortable working with an established methodology or contributing methodological thinking where a project is still developing.

Through CN Research, I provide independent research support to university teams and other organisations that need additional capacity or specialist input for a defined stage or component of a project. This might involve undertaking interviews, analysing existing data, contributing to mixed-method work, carrying out an evidence review, or taking responsibility for a specific analytical or reporting task.

Alongside my research career, I trained and established a professional practice as an integrative psychotherapist. This has further developed my experience of working sensitively with lived experience, and attending to meaning, context and individual perspectives — skills that continue to inform my research practice.
